Comedy

Comedy podcasts: they're funny.
  • Rooster Teeth Podcast
The folks of Rooster Teeth (an internet video company) get together for around an hour and a half each week to tell funny stories from their lives and from the internet.
  • Cold Sweats Podcast
For an hour each week, four friends get together to share "spooky" stories and rate them on their "patent-pending-pending belivability scale." More often than not they get off topic and end up playing a game, pretending to be Tom Cruise (not the actor), or sharing stories from their own lives.
  • Judge John Hodgman
When you have a mundane conflict with a friend or family member, only Judge John Hodgman can decide who's right and who's wrong. Whether its determining if a hot dog is a sandwich or not, or if a husband needs to take his bloody butcher's outfit out of the car every night so the car stops smelling like dead pigs, the Judge and his trusted Bailiff Jesse Thorn will use their unique sense of on-the-spot humor to get to the heart of the conflict and issue a ruling.
  • Dear Hank and John
Internet famous brothers Hank and John Green (yes, the well-known author) sit down to offer dubious advice while answering listener mail. Along the way they share how they're doing, a short poem, and all the news from a fourth tier English soccer team and the fourth planet from the sun (Mars).

News and Current Events

Just as it sounds, these podcasts discuss news and current events.
  • NPR Politics Podcast
Each Friday, NPR's political reporters sit down to summarize the week in US politics. Throughout the week they'll also discuss any important, breaking news.
  • FiveThirtyEight Elections
The reporters of FiveThirtyEight don't like to deal in hype or "media narratives." They look to hard data, from current polls and from past precedent, to inform their discussions on US elections.
  • On the Media
This weekly podcast (with occasional bonus episodes happening throughout the week) takes a look at the way the media reports and tells stories, and the relationship the public has with the media through the lense of specific stories (a recent episode followed a family whose son was kidnapped in the Middle East).
  • Science Weekly
Each week, for 20-30 minutes, this podcast disusses some recent topic in the world of science, whether its the psychology of money, the ethics of growing human embryos or the truth about the T-Rex.
  • Planet Money
  • Common Sense with Dan Carlin

Non-Fiction

My personal favorite category: Non-fiction podcasts can dive deep on ideas or topics or share incredible, true stories.
  • Reply All
A fantastic weekly show that shares "stories about the internet." As you can imagine, this allows for the show to cover a very wide range of topics. Every episode is unique and usually incredibly intriguing. One of my favorite podcasts week after week.
  • Mystery Show
Another incredible show. The first season ended last year and season 2 is in the works right now. The show follows a woman who attempts to solve mysteries, but not one's that can be solved simply by searching the Internet. Mysteries solved on the show include "how did Britany Spears get a copy of my book" and "where did this belt buckle I found in an alley decades ago come from?" Honostly I would recommend skipping the first episode (it's short and sort of boring). The remaining five episodes of the season are all great, however.

Talk

Talk podcasts are simple: a couple people sitting around a table and talking about something.
  • Question of the Day
As simple as it sounds. Three times a week, two guys (sometimes with a guest) sit down and talk about a question for 15-30 minutes.
  • The Weeds
Once a week, the three hosts of this podcast dive deep into one topic or issue, their goal being to "get into the weeds." Lasting about an hour per episode, the show focuses mainly on policy topics (not "politics").
  • The Ezra Klein Show
Each week, reporter Ezra Klein sits down for an hour or two with some important figure for what always proves to be a fascinating and entertaining discussion. Guests include Bill Gates, Rachel Maddow, various government officials, lobbyists, and renowned chefs.
  • Tomorrow with Joshua Topolsky
Former DJ and former tech journalist Joshua Topolsky sits down each week for a conversation with somebody. Sometimes the show is informational and sometimes it's simply hilarious. Josh will talk to anyone about anything, whether its movies, politics, the media, or a great idea for a resteraunt he has called "Dipperz" where you just dip things in stuff. Check out any episode with Paul Ford for many hilarious discussions of Dipperz.
  • The Vergecast
  • NPR Politics Podcast
  • FiveThirtyEight Elections

Fiction

Some fiction podcasts tell a single story over many episodes, some have a new story each episode.
  • The Author's Voice
Each week an author reads you a short story they wrote (they're usually around 30 minutes). The stories can be funny or dramatic or tragic. The genre can vary, but the stories are typically quite realistic (sorry sci-fi nerds).
  • Welcome to Nightvale
  • Hunt the Truth
  • Limetown

Technology

Technology podcasts: They discuss technology.

  • The Vergecast
Each week a group of tech nerds (or "journalists" as they call themselves) get together to talk about technology and culture for an hour.
